From Zine to Screen: Artist Workshop with Lane Timothy Speidel

From stone tablets to the printing press to TikTok, communications technology has played a key role in sharing beliefs and catalyzing movements. Join artist Lane Timothy Speidel, whose work is featured in the new exhibition Data Nation, as they lead a drop-in exploration of a time-honored form of communicating information and personal narratives: the zine! Short for “magazine”, zines are handmade, folded or bound paper publications. A method of communication and expression that can be made by anyone about anything! You’ll make your zine through cutting, collaging, writing, and scanning, found and created images, words, and textures. Your zine could be a poem, a story, a call to action, a gift for a friend. With or without words, your zine can be anything you want it to be! Once made, zines can be easily copied and reproduced so you can share it with your community. After completing your work, you can scan your zine and have its cover become part of a “digital quilt” showcasing the sense of community that forms when people create together. Presented as part of Civic Season in partnership with The Carpenters’ Company.

Please bring things from home to put in your zines - there will be a scanner available so anything precious like a family photograph you can scan and put in your zine! Other materials to explore will be provided.

The workshop itself is free with museum admission. Prices listed below include the cost of admission. The workshop is ongoing and drop-in, but registration is recommended to help us prepare.
